Police say Wamsganz is a white male, 6’3” tall, weighing about 180 pounds with a medium build. He has blond hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen around 2 Saturday afternoon by fellow workers at the Downtown Diner in Lake Placid. Witnesses say he left the restaurant and began walking along Sentinel Road in the village.

Initial reports indicate he may have been heading toward either the Northville-Lake Placid Trail or the Adirondack Loj, a popular entry into the High Peaks..

DEC spokesman David Winchell says forest rangers searched parking areas, trailheads and roadways near the Adirondack Loj on Monday.

“Right now we have State Police, the Lake Placid and Saranac Lake village police departments, and forest rangers continuing an investigation into this missing young man,” he said.

The search has now been expanded to include the wilderness south of the Adirondack Loj, after witnesses said they saw Wamsganz at the parking lot there on Saturday.

“We also have, because of those witnesses, forest rangers, state police troopers, state police special operations teams, and a K-9 unit searching the area along the trail south of Adirondack Loj – essentially between the Adirondack Loj trailhead and Marcy Dam,” he said.

Winchell said low clouds  prevented the use of a helicopter for an aerial searchyesterday.  And he said today’s forecast for high winds rules out the helicopter again.

Police say Wamsganz was last seen wearing a green Carhartt jacket over a black hooded sweatshirt, a Jamaican style red-green-and-yellow brimmed beanie, and hiking boots.

Late yesterday, officials confirmed they found the Carhartt jacket in the general search area. Winchell said the search was suspended at dark yesterday.

More forest rangers will join the search today, along with more than two dozen volunteers from the New York State Search and Rescue Foundation. State Police in Ray Brook will send two more K-9 units.

Winchell said they’ll start where the young man’s jacket was found.

Anyone with information about Wamsganz’s whereabouts is urged to contact Lake Placid police at 518-523-3306.
