Lake Colby school to close

Listen to this story
Saranac Lake's school board has voted to close one of its satellite schools next year. The Lake Colby school, which had been used for pre-K and kindergarten students, will be shuttered because of declining enrollments and tight budgets.

The move comes roughly two years after the district closed another elementary school building in Lake Clear.

Superintendent Gerald Goldman told the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that there was far less controversy over this decision.

"I also think the economic climate is much different now," Goldman the newspaper.

He added  "I think people realize that our enrollment's going down, and it's a marginal building.”

Lake Colby is only the latest school closing and consolidation in the North Country.  Districts across the region have faced shrinking numbers of students.

They’ve also seen financial aid from Albany dwindle.
