Mehlman won’t name the Senators he’s meeting with, though there are a handful who are undecided on the issue, and he said he told them that supporting same sex marriage is "consistent with both Republican interests and Republican principles."

“Former Vice President Cheney said it, 'freedom means freedom for everybody.'” Mehlman said. "I want to encourage more families."

Mehlman said the Senators have been very "open-minded" and are taking the issue "quite seriously." He said the talks did not address the threat from the state’s Conservative Party to withdraw endorsement from any Senator who votes for gay marriage.
