Senator Skelos said he expects a “lengthy and thoughtful” conference to discuss Governor Cuomo’s bill to allow same sex marriage, and to talk about amendments that would guarantee greater protections for religious groups who oppose gay marriage.
“We’re going to conference the language of the amendments, we’re going to conference the whole issue,” Skelos said. “And I expect that’s going to take a little time.”
Skelos had initially said he wanted to wait until the tax cap and rent law extension bills were settled and those measures are still not finalized. Assembly Democrats, who would need to also approve any amendments to the gay marriage bill if the Senate were to vote, have completed most of their business for the year and are anxious to leave.
