Nine Mile 2 reactor still shut down following leak
Oswego, NY, Aug 09, 2011 — The Nine Mile Point Unit 2 reactor on Lake Ontario is still closed after a leakage in a containment structure the weekend. The reactor shut down this weekend after a "higher-than-normal leakage" was discovered inside the facility's drywell, the containment structure that surrounds the reactor vessel and associated piping.
The incident was classified as an "unusual event," the lowest level of nuclear power plant emergencies.
Constellation Energy Nuclear Group spokeswoman Jill Lyon said the reactor will remain shut down until the necessary repairs and post maintenance testing are finished and that the leakage didn’t pose a danger:
"The water that was leaking was contained within all the plant systems, and didn’t cause any concern for the folks that work here or in the surrounding community. Anything out of the ordinary is something we report."
Lyon said the company has determined the source of the leakage was a valve on a recirculation pump.
