We’re seeing a sharp increase in copper thefts simply to sell it for the scrap value.
Police search for thief who stole $5000 in metals from DEC site
Newton Falls, NY, Dec 28, 2011 — The state department of environmental conservation is looking for help in finding the person or people who stole brass and copper tubing, pipes, fittings and other items from a St. Lawrence County petroleum contamination cleanup site.
The DEC discovered last week that someone had broken into buildings at the former Jones and Laughlin Ore Processing site on State Route 3 outside of Newton Falls.

Lieutenant Matt Revenaugh is with the Environmental Conservation Police. He says they’re working on the assumption that the metal was stolen for its scrap value.
Unfortunately now the price of copper is up quite high…we’re seeing a sharp increase in copper thefts simply to sell it for the scrap value.
Revenaugh says it will cost about $5000 to replace what was stolen—but the actual scrap value of the metal would be substantially less.
He says anyone with information about the theft should call the Environmental Conservation Police at 315-785-2231—and any information will be kept “highly confidential.”
