Hamilton County selling Oak Mountain ski area

Listen to this story
Local officials in Hamilton County are once again trying to sell the Oak Mountain ski area in the town of Speculator. The ski area was taken over by local government officials after a private operator failed to make a go of it. As Martha Foley reports, they hope to find a new owner willing to keep the resort alive.

CLARIFICATION: The Oak Mountain ski area is currently owned and operated by the Hamilton County Industrial Development Authority, a public benefit corporation. Bill Farber is the IDA's co-chair, as well as the chairman of Hamilton County's board of supervisors.

Bill Farber is chair of the Hamilton County board of supervisors.  "It was a bunch of very unfortunate circumstances that left us with the ski mountain.  And it's always been our thinking that getting the ski area back in private hands was the right way to go," he said.

Hamilton County is operating the mountain again this winter and Farber says conditions on the trails are improving.  But he says it's been a tough season for ski area operators public and private.

"This is the kind of ski season that you're not excited about if your'e a ski area operator. There's a huge amount of revenue and value that's dervied from having decent snow between Christmas and New Years.  This obviously wasn't a banner year in that regard."

The ski area includes more than 200 acres of land, a small mountain, and a cell phone tower site.  Farber says county leaders are hoping to find a buyer that will continue to operate Oak Mountain as a ski center.  Bids for the property will be opened in March.
