More than 13% of the population of the Akwesasne reservation, has either Type I or Type II diabetes. The new diabetes center is part of the formal program the Tribal Council has developed, to systematically address the problem.
The program includes medical treatment, and education on health and lifestyle issues. Along with offices and treatment rooms, the center will have exercise areas, gardens and a kitchen.
Construction will begin this spring.
