Firefighters still extinguishing "hotspots" in Massena Alcoa West fire

UPDATE: Alcoa now says a preliminary survey of the casthouse Friday "determined areas that are structurally safe. This allowed state fire investigators to begin their investigation. It is too soon to determine the extent of damage to equipment and the long-term impact on processes. It is unknown how long the investigation process will take."

Firefighters were still working Friday afternoon to extinguish small flare-ups called "hot spots." at the Alcoa West plant near Massena. The fire began Thursday afternoon.

Alcoa spokeswoman Laurie Marr says until the hot spots are taken care of, the fire can’t be investigated—and she doesn’t know when that’s going to be:

We just have to wait and see, when the firefighters say the fire is out, and we’re cleared for entry, and then the structural integrity assessment will have to take place before any other kind of investigation can take place. We have no idea what the time frame is on that at this point.

Marr says no one was hurt in the fire—and that the thick black smoke that drifted over Massena during the fire isn’t something people need to be worried about:

The police, the mayor, we had a lot of inquiries yesterday, and the firefighters assured everyone that the smoke was from the roof of the cast house burning. It wasn’t from any hazardous materials or chemicals—it was primarily a roof fire.

The fire started yesterday at the plant’s casthouse—that’s where molten metal is poured into molds. Marr says casting is still going on at the plant, just in a different location.
