Cuomo tamps down speculation about 2016
Speaking with reporters yesterday (Wednesday), the governor tried to put the rumors to rest.
Referring to his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo's, flirtation with national office in the 1990s, he joked, "I've seen this movie before and I know how it turns out."
Martha Foley has more.
The comment came in answer to reporters' questions in the same room his father, former Gov. Mario Cuomo, had frequently discussed running for president.
It was the first time the younger Cuomo has addressed speculation that he might want to seek the presidency in 2016. He said he finds the talk “flattering”, but he says overtly political talk can be “distracting” when he’s trying to govern and get along with both parties in the legislature. “All I’m working on is being the best governor I can be, “ said Cuomo. “That’s really, really where I am in my heart, and that’s where I’m going to stay. I will not be pushed politically."
Cuomo also says he's unsure whether or not he'll be on the campaign trail for President Barack Obama nationally.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says he thinks Hillary Clinton – now Secretary of State, former first Lady and Senator from New York -- would make a good candidate for President next time around. Silver said, she’s a “great talent”, but he says Cuomo is also a “great democrat who is a potential leader”.
