Senators seek transition support for vets
Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and
Charles Schumer say the proposed legislation is needed to reduce a 12%
unemployment rate among veterans.
Senator Gillibrand says the bills would expand transition training programs,
increase access to education and make it easier to hire vets, "Too often when our veterans come home, they can't translate all
the skills and learning they received while serving onto a resume for civilian
jobs, a task anybody would struggle with."
The proposed legislation would expand existing training programs.
Employers would also be required to recognize more of the skills, like
electrician or operating heavy machinery, acquired by applicants during
military service.
Senator Gillibrand says all three have bipartisan support.
