Cantaloupes recalled for possible listeria contamination

Listen to this story
A North Carolina farm is recalling 580 cases of cantaloupes that were sent to New York and other states because they could be contaminated with listeria. Burch Equipment says the whole Athena cantaloupes were shipped July 15. They have a red label that says Burch Farms. The farm says no illnesses have been reported from the cantaloupes.

Price Chopper does not list the recall on its website.  But Hannaford, which has stores in Massena, Watertown, and Lake Placid, is advising customers because its stores did carry the Burch Farms Athena cantaloupes. Hannaford says the product has been removed. The Burch Farm stickers read:  “Cantaloupe PLU 4319.”

People are advised not to eat these cantaloupes. Listeria has the potential to cause serious illness. Last year, a listeria outbreak in Rocky Ford cantaloupes was blamed for the 30 deaths. That contamination was traced to Jenson Farms in eastern Colorado.
