Hammond's Black Lake not safe for swimming, says DEC
Hammond, NY, Aug 15, 2012 — The New York Department of Environmental Conservation is warning people and pets to stay away from the water at Black Lake in Hammond.
The state has confirmed blue-green algae and toxins in the lake, in high enough quantities to cause health effects in those who swim in or drink the water.

The DEC says extended contact with an algae bloom could cause vomiting, diarrhea, skin or throat irritation.
Harmful blue-green algae blooms can make the water look like pea soup, or cause green streaks or dots in the water. An algae bloom is an explosion of bacteria, which thrives on high levels of phosphorus in the water.
