20-25 foot waves forecast for Lake Ontario

Listen to this story
High winds are forecast to whip up huge waves on Lake Ontario.

Senior Chief Craig Ross, officer in charge at the U.S. Coast Guard station in Oswego, says his crew is preparing to respond to emergencies. He says forecasters are predicting a big storm surge. "They're expecting 20 to 25 foot waves, concentrating on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario," Ross says. "They're also expecting possible lakeshore flooding and heavy rain and heavy wind."

The Coast Guard is urging boat owners to pull their craft from the water if at all possible.
