Shifting hillside threatens Saranac Lake main street

A steep hillside that sits above downtown Saranac Lake has begun to slide toward the village's main street, Broadway.

That's according to an announcement released over the weekend by village mayor Clyde Rabideau.

Rabideau says "years of rain and gravity" have caused the hillside to shift, possibly endangering people and property.

According to the release, a Federal FEMA grant is paying for a project to sink anchors into the slope that will help stabilize it.

Rabideau says a company from Plattsburgh has begun work on the project and are hoping to finish before winter conditions set in.
