Heard Up North: Little lotus yoga for kids
Canton, NY, Dec 03, 2012 — Yoga has become popular in the North Country among adults, and especially senior citizens. Now, instructor Sarah Scafidi-McGuire has started teaching yoga to to the younger set, in a class she calls Little Lotus, for toddlers.
Scafidi-McGuire welcomes the kids and adults to the class with a bell, and the class joins her in chanting "Ohm…." She passes the bell down, and the kids repeat, "ohmmm…"
You might not notice the number of yoga poses named after animals until you practice with a bunch of kids. "Alright, good job", Scafidi-McGuire says, and puts on a song called "the gorilla song". "So first, we're going to turn into gorillas. Swing your arms." The kids do.She says she thinks it's great for kids to be active, and "it also helps them to just love yoga, and so maybe I'm hoping that they'll try it when they're older and say, 'I love yoga.' And have it be part of their lives as they grow up."
