Schumer lobbies to make NY's dams safer

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer says the North Country has 180 hazardous dams, including 24 in St. Lawrence County, 11 in Herkimer, and 7 in Lewis County. He's pushing for more federal money to improve dam safety, through a bill called the Water Resources Development Act. It could be up for a vote later this month.

In a press release, Schumer says dams protect local homes, businesses, and human life. He touts their benefits, such as flood protection, drinking water, hydropower, and recreation.

Schumer says one of the most important reasons to pass the Water Act, is to boost federal funding for dam inspections and maintenance, and for stronger safety requirements.

He says as weather patterns become more extreme, it's the federal government's job to make sure the nation's aging dams and other infrastructure are safe and reliable.
