The company, which owns the Mountain Mart chain of convenience stores, agreed to pay the fine last month. The Environmental Protection Agency found improper recordkeeping and testing of the company's underground gas tanks between 2008 and 2010.

In a press release Tuesday, the EPA said Adirondack Energy would pay an additional 112,000 dollars or more. The company will replace conventional leak detection equipment with high-tech ones that transmit data electronically in real time. EPA regional administrator Judith Enck said that monitoring would protect against potential petroleum leaks and groundwater contamination. The company will also have to conduct environmental audits at each of its nine gas stations in Plattsburgh, Massena, Malone, Moira, and Canton.

Last month, Adirondack Energy said it was "unaware" of federal reporting requirements and that "zero harm" was done to the environment.

The company is owned by the Monette family of Malone, which also owns the Holiday Inn there and bought the Titus Mountain ski area two years ago.
