Why Sen. Schumer wants Medicare changes

Senator Charles Schumer will be at Samaritan Hospital in Watertown Tuesday, pushing for changes to the Medicare law. He says elderly patients are being charged unfairly for nursing home care and prescription drugs after being hospitalized.

After a hospital stay, people may still need medical attention, but are not technically considered "inpatients."  Schumer says Medicare often doesn't cover this care.  That means seniors are left with thousands of dollars in medical bills.

Schumer's Medicare proposal would provide coverage for prescription drugs and other post-hospitalization care.
