NY counties push "no new mandates" law

Counties across the state are declaring a "Mayday" for Mandate Relief.

County leaders across New York are using the month of May to press state lawmakers to introduce and pass legislation that would prevent new unfunded mandates.

A press release yesterday from the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) announced a “Mayday” for mandate relief.

Edward A. Diana, president of the Association, wrote: "Our counties are cutting local services because we have to pay the state's bills first.”  He said “The present system is just unsustainable.”

Diana, of Orange County, cited fixed costs of programs like health insurance and pensions and the projected increases in other state-mandated programs.
