Joyce Wood, of Hammond, is 74. She'd never played Powerball in her life when she bought a ticket at Price Chopper and won $107.

She went to Kinney Drugs in Ogdensburg to redeem that ticket, and found herself leaving the store with another one. "She asked me if I wanted Powerplay and I said sure why not? I didn't know what it was, but man am I glad I did it!"

Joyce checked her computer after the numbers were released, and said she was in complete disbelief. "My youngest daughter called to check in and I said, I think I'm having a heart attack."

Joyce's daughter verified the numbers and they headed over to Kinney. "When we came in the lady checked them and I couldn't believe it! I thought there was a mistake… It's just unbelievable. It's hard to imagine that I have that much money now… My knees went to jelly and she said, 'are you alright?', and I said no…I'm just so happy and the people here were so nice. I got a hug from everyone that worked here I think."

Joyce is the first New York lottery winner of 2013 in St. Lawrence County.

At the event, longtime New York Lottery personality Yolanda Vega said "it never gets old. It's always a new story… a new winner… the excitement, the emotion… I share it with them."

Joyce will take home approximately $1.3 million after taxes. She has seven children, 13 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She says, besides helping her family, she has no plan on how to spend the money yet.
