Syracuse scores high with consumers

Buyers in Syracuse and Albany are finally starting to feel like this year's economy will be better than the last.

Central New York now has the highest consumer confidence score for the past three months among upstate metro regions.

The index is compiled by Siena College.

Dr. Douglas Lonnstrom, director of the research institute, says people are feeling better than they did five years ago. "Clearly the momentum is in the positive side right now. But that's, of course, we bottomed out with that recession so things had to get better. And they are getting better."

But the Binghamton region is still struggling. Confidence there had the smallest increase for upstate cities. And it remains the lowest in the state.

A consumer confidence index measures people's willingness to spend money.

By and large, New York's consumer confidence index moves hand-in-hand with a national index tabulated by the University of Michigan.
