Will the Vermont Gas line serve all of Ticonderoga?

Listen to this story
One lingering question on the New York side of the lake is whether this gas pipeline project will benefit consumers in Ticonderoga other than International Paper.

Some local residents and businesses hope that they too might eventually be able to tap into low-cost natural gas delivered from Vermont.

Speaking this week, Eileen Simollardes with Vermont Gas said it is possible that a distribution system will eventually be expanded in New York.

"We have not had conversations with the town of Ticonceroga about gas sevice," Simollardes said, but "we have also never looked at them and said 'No way, no how,'" she said.

According to Simollardes, Vermont Gas's first goal is to reach IP's mill with a trunk line that would pass under Lake Champlain.

"And then we'll look at whether or not it's possible to serve the village of Ticonderoga," she said, adding, "We've not slammed any doors nor have we opened them and said, 'Just wait, we're going to serve you next.'"

Simollardes did say the pipeline now being proposed does have the capacity to serve customers beyond the International Paper mill.
