Meet Mary Ann Ashley, Canton's new mayor

Canton has a new mayor: Republican Mary Ann Ashley. Ashley ran as a Democrat in order to challenge Republican incumbent mayor Dave Curry. She won with 68% of the votes - a decisive victory that was coupled with new blood on the village board.

The St. Lawrence Brewery last night was packed last night as people clapped and cheered, filled their glasses and chowed down on pizza to celebrate Ashley’s victory. But Canton’s new mayor was humble:

"I’m grateful," Ashley said. "I’m grateful that the voters have their confidence in me. And it’s going to be a good board to work with."

It’s not just Ashley who will bring new leadership to Canton next year. There will be two new trustees on the village board – a big change for a body of 4 people.

 Democrat Carol Pynchon was elected.

And since Mary Ann Ashley is a trustee, she’ll get to appoint someone to fill her spot.

But the vote wasn’t a complete call for change.

Current village board trustee Republican Michael Dalton was also-re-elected.

Ashley says she’s looking forward to all the new faces in local government.

"The energy’s there. The energy is there. And the caring and the listening to the people is very important. So I’m very excited."

As mayor, Ashley says she plans to work on re-developing the Jubilee parking lot, as well as the waterfront.

"What are we going to do for Canton? We’re going to work closely with the town, we’re going to move forward with the Canton Community Action Plan as well as the Waterfront Revitalization Plan, and we’re going to move forward with economic development, and we’re going to look at the finances closely."

Republican mayor Dave Curry was at his bar downtown when the results came in.

Curry was disappointed and didn’t want to talk on tape.

But he did wish the new village board good luck.
