Postcard from an alpine ramble on Catamount

Listen to this story
The long, mild autumn we've been having has been tough for many hunters, who prefer colder, snowier weather.

But it's a boon for hikers, who've had extra weeks and relatively dry trails to explore the Adirondacks.

Brian Mann set out last weekend for a ramble up Catamount, a popular peak not far from Wilmington. He sent back this audio postcard.

The scree ladder on Catamount is a special favorite of kids hiking in the Adirondacks.  You feel like you're really hiking into the mountain, and you can peek over the edge for thrilling views of the valley.

All along the hike there are breathtaking views of the Sentinel Range.

Basically, whenever you glance over your shoulder, there's something cool to look at.  Which takes your mind off the steep staircase-like hiking.

Up on top, Catamount can be breezy, but the summit offers a panorma of the northeastern Adironadcks, with glimpses of Lake Champlain.  There are plenty of spots to hunker down and have a picnic out of the wind.
