St. Lawrence County tries to fix its budget

The Watertown Daily Times reports that St. Lawrence County legislators are trying to fix the 2014 county budget.

The original draft of the budget included $1.5 million dollars that the county is due to receive from St. Regis Mohawk casino revenue.

But state-tribal compact funds have been delayed in the past because of disagreements between the tribe and New York state.

According to the Times, county legislators decided they couldn’t count on having the money.

So last night, they cut about  $800,000 from the budget.

Legislators still plan to reduce property taxes by 14 percent next year and increase the sales tax by 1 percent.

They could adopt the budget as early as next week.
