Between 20 and 25 homes were evacuated as a precaution. Route 11 was closed and traffic rerouted as emergency crews worked to find the source of the leak.

"It would appearto be a surveyor’s stake driven through a gas service line to a house," Canton fire chief Robert Crowe said. "That resulted in gas leaking and going through the ground into the sanitary sewer."

Crowe said that the gas company was able to locate the leak and repair the pipe.

People were allowed back into their homes late last night.
