NY DOT wants timely overhaul of Whiteface highway

WILMINGTON, N.Y. (AP) State officials are pushing an accelerated timeline for the eight-mile overhaul of the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that Department of Transportation project manager Geoff Wood hopes to have his portion of the project designed by mid-January and ready to advertise to contractors by February.

The DOT is slated to open bids March 6 and award them April 1, with construction set to begin April 15 and be complete by mid-December 2014.

Wood noted in a meeting Wednesday night at Whiteface Mountain that it's likely not much construction work will be able to be done early in the season, but contractors could get a head start by setting up an office and buying materials so they're ready to go when the weather cooperates.
