NY education reform commission issues final report

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) A commission appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to recommend education reforms is out with its final report.

Cuomo already has embraced many of the recommendations released Tuesday and advanced several in his 2014 State of the State address. They include expanding full-day pre-kindergarten, upgrading classroom technology and rewarding top teachers.

The 25-member New NY Education Reform Commission began its work in 2012 and issued preliminary recommendations a year ago.

Chairman Richard Parsons calls the final report a roadmap that will guide the state in allocating resources and improving teacher and student achievement.

Recommendations also include providing more college scholarships in high-needs STEM fields, promoting paid internships and reducing obstacles to school district mergers.
