The state Public Service Commission announced Thursday it would seek a consultant to conduct an independent audit of New York's major energy utilities. Auditors will be asked to determine if the utilities have enough workers in field operations, customer service and other areas that affect service.

The audit will focus on Consolidated Edison, National Grid, Central Hudson Gas and Electric, National Fuel Gas Distribution Company, Orange and Rockland Utilities, Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation and NYSEG.

A final report is expected by August 2015.
