Weibrecht makes US Sochi Team

Listen to this story
Another North Country athlete has qualified for the Sochi Winter Olympics, now less than two weeks away. Over the weekend, the US ski team named Andrew Weibrecht from Lake Placid to the squad.

Weibrecht will compete in the men's downhill, super-g and supercombined. Weibrecht captured a bronze medal in super-g in 2010 in Vancouver.

In the year's since that race, Weibrecht has struggled with illness and equipment problems. In a tweet sent over the weekend, he acknowledged those problems and said being named to the team "means a lot."

The North Country has more than a dozen athletes going to Sochi, and racers from this region will anchor the US luge and biathlon teams.

Gold medalist Bill Demong also offers the US a real chance to capture more medals in Nordic combined, a sport that combines long-distance ski jumping and x-country racing.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics, the North Country accounted for roughly 1 out of 10 medals scored by the entire US.
