Gouverneur's Kinney Nursing Home may close

Listen to this story
The state Department of Health is reviewing a plan to close Kinney Nursing Home.

Last December, Canton-Potsdam Hospital purchased the assets of both E.J. Noble Hospital and the nursing home, which had been operating a loss.

A new entity, Gouverneur Hospital, has emerged, and operations began last month, under a new parent organization, the St. Lawrence Health System. But the nursing home may not be part of the new organization's future.

If the state approves the plan from the St. Lawrence Health System, the nursing home could close within 90 days.

That doesn't sit well with the Rev. Robert LaVeck, who runs church services at the nursing home. He's organizing Gouverneur church leaders and citizens to come out against the closure.

LaVeck says it's important for the elderly to stay in their homes communities, near their families.

"When you find yourself in a nursing home, all of a sudden your money doesn't mean anything, any houses or cars doesn't mean nothing. Nothing matters except the ones that you love still want to love you, still come and see you, still come and talk to you, may even bring some goodies once in a while."

There are currently 32 people living in the nursing home. It has 40 beds.

The nursing home has been cited by the Health Department for 30 safety violations over the past three years.

St. Lawrence Health Systems would say only that the closure plan is under review by the state. They would not comment on the nursing home's financial situation or any other reasons why it might be closed.
