Wildlife officials warn of restless, grumpy bears

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Vermont Fish and Wildlife officials are warning the public to beware of grumpy bears.

Wildlife experts say the fickle winter weather has exposed bear dens, prompting the bears to awaken from hibernation routines.

Officials say they have fielded reports of bears at bird feeders and roaming around residential areas.

The Burlington Free Press quotes wildlife officials as saying rabbit hunters should be especially cautious because the disrupted bears will often bed down in evergreen thickets.

They also warn hunters, hikers and skiers not to follow bear tracks, saying some bears may be travelling with newborn cubs.
