Athletes who miss the target during the shooting portion of biathlon are forced to ski penalty laps, adding significantly to their time.

Cook finished 53rd overall.  In Facebook posts and interviews, Cook has expressed delight at the opportunity to take part in the Olympics, which she has described as a thrilling experience.

The fastest US woman on the course today was Susan Dunklee from Vermont, who finished in 18th place.

Dunklee appeared to be in contention until she missed three targets in a round of shooting.
