Sochi: Erin Hamlin claims 1st-ever US luge bronze

Erin Hamlin, the North Country slider from Remsen who spends much of each year in Lake Placid, made history a short time ago, winning a first-ever USA luge medal by capturing the bronze in Sochi.

Hamlin, age 27, positioned herself for this dramatic day by laying down two clean, technically near-flawless runs yesterday on the sliding track in Sochi.

She then had to wait overnight and return to competition today. In her first run this morning, she held steady, locking in a solid third-place position behind two German racers.

Hamlin hoped to move up into a silver-medal position.

But Natalie Geisenberger and Tatjana Huefner showed no vulnerability in their two runs, with Geisenberger laying down another course record on this track.

The US Olympic team tweeted a celebration right after Hamlin's run, declaring "history made!"  Hamlin also received tweets of congratulation from bobsled gold medalist Steve Holcomb, North Country state Senator Joe Griffo, and Governor Andrew Cuomo.

"We're SO PROUD of Remsen's own Erin Hamlin," Griffo tweeted.

Hamlin's victory marks the first medal win in the Sochi games for athletes hailing from the North Country.
