Republicans appear to have settled on Elise Stefanik, a former White House aide who moved to Willsboro in Essex County last year. But Democrats, so far, have seen a number of top potential candidates bow out of the race.

In a statement issued late yesterday, the chairs of the districts' county Democratic committees said they hoped to make a statement about an endorsement at the end of today's meetings.

Top names still being talked about as possible candidates include former Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, who now works for the Cuomo administration, and former Democratic state Senator and Agriculture Commissioner Darrel Aubertine.
