Schumer vows to fight troop reduction at Fort Drum

New York Senator Charles Schumer will be at city hall in Watertown this afternoon and says he'll fight to block any troop reduction at the nearby Fort Drum Army base.

In a statement released this morning, Schumer suggested that Army downsizing and return of the so-called "sequester" budget cutting measure in Washington could threaten troop levels at the base.

In a statement released this morning, Schumer suggested that Army downsizing and return of the so-called "sequester" budget cutting measure in Washington could threaten troop levels at the base.

Schumer has argued that Fort Drum's contingent of light infantry and rapid deployment forces are a good fit for the Pentagon's vision of a smaller, more nimble military.

He says maintaining those units should be a priority for defense planners.

At the gathering today, scheduled for 2:45, Schumer will be joined by Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham and other community members concerned about Fort Drum's future.
