Kinney Nursing Home supporters pack Gouverneur village meeting

Supporters of Kinney Nursing home packed into the Gouverneur village board meeting last night. The home has been operating at a loss, and St. Lawrence Health System, which owns it, filed the plan to close the home in late December. The New York State Department of Health is currently reviewing the plan.

Mayor Ron McDougall says people are really worried that the nursing home may close. "The overwhelming majority of people in the room understand it may be slipping away and we want to see what we can do to save the nursing home."

If the state OKs the planned closure, the nursing home could close within 90 days.

McDougall says supporters proposed building a larger nursing home in Gouverneur. They also proposed a referendum in support of the nursing home. And they hope to bring the issue to county and state officials.

Like a lot of Gouverneur residents, the mayor has a personal connection to Kinney Nursing Home: "I couldn't help but think back on the years of care my mother got, who's no longer with us. But good care, local community, very important."

According to the Watertown Daily Times this morning, the village board passed a resolution opposing the closure of the nursing home, and the Town Board will take up a similar measure.

The paper also reports county Democratic Legislator Donald Peck, of Gouverneur, said he'll bring the concerns to the full County Board of Legislators.
