SUNY Plattsburgh: the other big North Country victory

While Clarkson was duking it out for the Division I championship on Sunday, the Division III Women's Ice Hockey team at SUNY Plattsburgh was already celebrating.

Over the weekend, the Cardinals beat Norwich University, 9-2, for their third national title.

It was a home game for the team, at the Stafford Ice Arena. Head Coach Kevin Houle says the familiar atmosphere made the victory even sweeter.

"I think that definitely makes it special," he said. "We were able to play here in front of almost 1,700 fans, on a weekend where our students were on spring break. So, to win at home in front of family and friends, and having the great community support from Plattsburgh, definitely makes the national championship special and enhances it for sure."

Houle says one of the main reasons the team triumphed was their intense focus.

The Cardinals made it to the final four the previous two seasons, but didn’t come home with a national title. All season, he says the athletes were really itching for the big win.

"So the team was on a specific mission, I guess, and we had our goal set on getting back the national championship," Houle said.

The last time the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey won the Division III title was 2008. Now that they are national champions again, Houle says everyone is on cloud nine.

"I’m just assuming everybody’s kind of enjoying the big victory and just feeling pretty good about themselves right now."

He says the athletes were back in class yesterday, and they’re starting to return to their normal routines.
