Public will see plans for the new Camp Gabriels next week

The public will get its first look next week at the plan to convert a now shuttered state prison near Paul Smiths into a summer camp and year-round educational retreat.

A pair of downstate men are in the process of purchasing Camp Gabriels, which the state closed in 2009. The state approved the sale of the property just last week.

Town of Brighton Supervisor Peter Shrope said the new owner, Adam Fine of Rockland County, his lawyer and Adirondack Park Agency representatives will be on hand at 6 pm next Tuesday to talk about the plan to turn Camp Gabriels into a privately-run residential summer camp and educational retreat center.

The state comptroller's office approved the sale of the property last week. A closing date has yet to be set.

An application on file with the APA says many of the existing buildings will be used largely as they were for the correctional facility. Other buildings will be converted to classrooms, a library, housing units, a gym and a dining hall. A two-to-three-acre area will be cleared for athletic fields. The plan also calls for an in-ground outdoor swimming pool with a removable dome.

The new owners are working to have the property's electrical, water supply and wastewater treatment systems inspected while the agency is reviewing the application.

Meanwhile, the APA has asked the state Office of Historic Preservation to review the application, noting that there are buildings on the property which are more than 50 years old. The property was home to a tuberculosis sanitarium from the 1890s until the 1950s.

Town of Brighton officials have said the new owners want to have a first camp session on the property this summer.

The informational meeting will be held at 6 pm Tuesday at the Paul Smith's College VIC.
