Young farmers, Ogdensburg get help in state budget

State Senator Patty Ritchie says the new state budget will help young farmers just getting started. The deal includes one million dollars for grants to help beginning farmers start or expand an agricultural business.

Ritchie says the budget will also help economic development in Ogdensburg. It authorizes the transfer of 45 acres of vacant state land on the Psychiatric Center grounds to be transferred to the city of Ogdensburg. "This will start the ball rolling and put those 45 acres back on the tax rolls,"says Ritchie, "helping with moving it forward for redevelopment to help create some jobs in the area."

The Psychiatric Center nearly lost hundreds of jobs last year with a plan to downsize the state mental health system. But after fierce lobbying from the community, Governor Cuomo has named it a center of excellence for providing mental health services to young people.

Ritchie says there are hundreds more acres of land on the center campus that can be redeveloped for commercial purposes.
