Students show films inspired by Herzog's footage

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) -- University of Vermont film students who got a chance to collaborate with award-winning director Werner Herzog will be showing their films in Burlington.

The free event takes place Wednesday night at 6:30 at the Burlington City Arts Center.

The short films were produced after a UVM lecturer attended a talk by Herzog last fall and asked him to make a short movie for his class using a Super 8mm film camera.

Herzog sent back a three-minute movie and instructions on how the film students should use the piece in their own work. He told the students to incorporate some of his footage but said most of their film should contain their own work.

Herzog received a 2009 Oscar nomination for his documentary "Encounters at the End of the World."
