SUNY Potsdam, Canton each get their own president

Canton and Potsdam's state universities each got new presidents Thursday.

In a press release, the State University of New York's Board of Trustees announced that Kristen Esterberg will be the 16th president of SUNY Potsdam. She'll be the first woman to lead the college.

Esterberg is currently the provost and academic vice president at Salem State University, in Massachusetts.

The board also appointed Zvi Szafran as the president of SUNY Canton. Szafran is the vice president for academic affairs at Southern Polytechnic State University in Georgia. He has a PhD in Physical Inorganic Chemistry.

The SUNY board was considering hiring only one leader for both schools, to save money. But that plan faced strong opposition in the Canton and Potsdam communities, including from State Senator Patty Ritchie. In a release, Ritchie praised SUNY for “listening and responding to our concerns”.

Both presidents will begin their terms this summer.
