Cuomo, lawmakers push campaign finance changes

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A day after penning an op-ed piece arguing for campaign finance reform, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has support from two key lawmakers and Senate Republicans involved in negotiations.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says Wednesday he's encouraged that Cuomo is pushing public financing of campaigns, which would match small donor contributions with state funds.

The Manhattan Democrat has carried the issue for nearly three decades and is hoping that Cuomo can help build a consensus.

Democratic Sen. Jeff Klein, co-leader of the Senate, also supports the measure. But his Republican counterpart, Sen. Dean Skelos, opposes using taxpayer money to finance elections.

Skelos hasn't completely dismissed the idea, saying that there are ongoing discussions about changes.

Cuomo's op-ed was posted by the Huffington Post on Tuesday, the same day Senate Democrats released reform legislation.
