Trafficking victims to call for tougher penalties

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Human trafficking victims are gathering at the New York Statehouse to urge lawmakers to pass tougher punishments for those convicted of forcing others into sexual servitude.

Young women and girls are expected to speak out Tuesday in favor of legislation that would make the penalties for having sex with an underage human trafficking victim the same as those for raping a minor.

Lawmakers this year have proposed multiple bills designed to crack down on those who commit sex trafficking. Tuesday is human trafficking awareness day in New York state.
