May 14, 2014 — The race for the North Country's congressional seat gets a little more up close and personal today, with Republican challengers Matt Doheny and Elise Stefanik appearing at the same venue. Both will attend the Watertown Armed Forces Luncheon at noon at the Hilton Garden Inn.
The two candidates have traded barbs at long distance in recent weeks, through sharply worded emails and campaign flyers. This will be one of the first moments when they will appear at the same event.
Doheny, from Watertown, is running for the third time. Stefanik, who has already claimed the Conservative Party ballot line, moved to Willsboro last year and is making her first bid for public office. Later this month, they'll hold the first of two Republican debates on May 27, with the second debate scheduled for June 12.
The party primary is set for June 24. Democrat Aaron Woolf and Green Party candidate Matthew Funiciello are running unopposed. Incumbent Bill Owens, a Democrat from Plattsburgh, is stepping down at the end of this term.
