Rate of seat belt use lower in Northeast Kingdom

WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) Police in Vermont are enforcing seat belt laws to try to increase the use of seat belts, especially in the Northeast Kingdom.

The Vermont Highway Safety Alliance -- a collaboration of several state and private organizations -- is concerned that data from the Vermont Agency of Transportation shows that seat belt use is less than 78 percent in Caledonia, Essex and Orleans counties, compared to a rate of more than 84 percent statewide.

Authorities say data also shows that 25 of the 71 traffic deaths last year were of people who were not belted.

The Click it or Ticket enforcement period ends on June 1.
