Jun 02, 2014 — NEW YORK (AP) The New York Public Library says its new renovation plan is expected to cost $300 million.
Library President Tony Marx tells the New York Times that the plan calls for its flagship Schwarzman building to house four lending collections—for children, teens, business and photography.
The renovation also will double the library's exhibition space.
The work is expected to take three to four years.
A branch across the street will have a large education center for English-as-a-second language and computer training. That work is expected to be completed in four or five years.
The renovation replaces a plan that would have gutted the Schwarzman building's century-old book stacks. It drew widespread opposition from scholars and was the target of lawsuits.
