Retired Rochester cop pleads guilty in son's death at Old Forge motel

HERKIMER, N.Y. (AP) A retired upstate New York policeman has pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in the shooting death of his son.

Michael Leach was accused of intentionally shooting and killing his 38-year-old son in 2012 inside a motel room the two were sharing during a vacation in Old Forge. At the time, Leach said he thought he shot an intruder.

In Herkimer County Court Wednesday, it was revealed that Leach was having recurring nightmares, specifically about a figure entering his home dressed in black.

Defense experts evaluated Leach and concluded that he had post-traumatic stress and sleep disorders, and doctors found that he had a nightmare the night of the shooting.

The former Rochester police captain faces a six-month jail sentence and must receive treatment for his psychiatric illnesses.
