Senators back disaster aid for upstate New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Both of New York's senators are asking President Barack Obama to quickly approve the state's request for federal disaster aid for upstate counties recently hit hard by storms and flooding.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is seeking a federal major disaster declaration for 11 central and western New York counties.

Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand say the storms that began on May 12 caused more than $28 million in damage. The senators say federal aid is needed to help in recovery.

The affected counties are Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Delaware, Herkimer, Lewis, Livingston, Ontario, Otsego, Steuben and Yates.
